Filming Music Video Blog

This weekend became very vital in the effort to create the best music video needed to tell the story of the song "Hostage" by  Billie Eilish. Although I did not professional shoot my music video I did other things that will help me during the actual filming process which will allow me to better use time. The first thing that I did was create an outline of the whole entire process that will occur. The reason why I chose to create the outline and use it religiously is because with each lyric there is an action that takes place which the outline shows. The outline in my personal opinion is much easier. The reason why I included an outline is so that in case I don't follow the storyboard exactly I will have the outline. The outline is much easier to follow because it is not in picture form which does not always capture what is trying to be said it helps because I'm not a visual learner. Writing things down allows me to visualize things, hence the outline. Include in this outline are the lyrics and beside it an exact description of what will take place as well as the actions that the actor will take during this specific lyric. An example of this is during the lyric  "Like a Hostage" the scene that will be shown will be of the actor pulling on the chains that hold her captive. The outline will also be given to the actor, The reason why the outline will be given to the actor is to speed up production. When the actor has an exact model of what is suppose to happen it allows for me to able to quickly shoot the scenes without having to reshoot scenes.
This weekend I also pre-shot all the scenes that are going to be in my music video. What I mean by this is that I took my iPhone and shot the exacts scenes that will take place as well as scenes that will be in the video. I also pre-shot these scenes at both locations the one at the motel as well as the one in case a situation occurs which is the empty bedroom at my peer's house. The reason why I shot at both locations is to see how the video would look at each location. While pre-shooting I got prior permission to film at the motel. During this pre-shot, I also filmed with all the props and costumes. The reason is to get a feel on how the end product would look with these products. Another reason was to see how if changes needed to be made to the original outline. Doing this I made changes that I feel will better the video. An example of this is instead of the costume being a shirt and ripped jeans it will only be a ripped shirt.
Another thing that I did which is vital in the filming process even though I did not technically film is secure things needed when actually filming. An example is that I secured all my props. These props included ropes, chains, and handcuffs. To reiterate these props are vital in telling a story in which is someone is being held, hostage. I had a variety of props that I wanted to use bus the pre-shoot helped in deciding which were better to use. Another thing was secure my actors. I secured the actor that will be in the music video as well as her availability on when she can film. I also set a date in which the entire day will be dedicated to filming. As well as added few details to better the project. An example of this is shutting the actor's mouth with tape. All in all, although no filming took place this weekend, the multiple steps that I have taken will ensure the smooth sailing of this project.

Music Video Storyboard Blog

Today I drew my storyboard of my music video Hostage by Billie Eilish which will include all scenes that will help tell my story. The first few scenes are establishing shots of the whole motel, the longer shots our of the bed and the bathtub. The reason why these shots are longer because they are the most important scenes in telling the story I believe the lyrics are trying to say. My first scene is of a wide shot of the motel. The second six-second is of another wide shot of the bed at the motel, at the 18 seconds there is another wide shot of the bathtub. On the 24 second mark, the story that I am trying to show is really presented. The rest of the scenes contain the actor lip-syncing and in handcuffs depicting being held, hostage. The last scenes are of the actor finally getting killed by being hostage. It symbolizes how the things that trap someone like friendships and relationships may kill them.
My camera angles are going to really not shift from what a regular alternative/indie music video usually looks like.

  1. High Angle
  2. Pan
  3. Tilt
  4. Eye-level and Zoom
Movements and Shots will include

  1. Close-up
  2. long shot
  3. Wide shot
  4. Establishing shot
  5. Medium close up
Mis-En-Scene

  1. Costumes- There will be only one costume throughout the whole video, which will include ripped jeans as well as a ripped shirt.
  2. Lighting- The lighting that will be shown in this video is very dark, the only light will be a single lamp.
  3. Actors- There is only one actor in the entire production
  4. Make-Up- Make-up will include special effects that make the actor appear to have been beaten
  5. Props- Props will include rope, chains, and handcuffs
  6. Setting- The place in which this product will take place is at a motel.
My editing and Sound will be very basic as well and really stick to the concept of what a normale alternative/indie music video will be like. During the editing process, I will eye-line match, jump cut as well as a cutaway. The sound in the video will just contain the actual song by Billie Eilish.

Planning Music video

Today in class I planned all the crucial things needed to make this music video successful as well as making sure I tell the story of what the lyrics are trying to say.  The location that I will be filming at is a motel called the "Hotel Gateway Inn" in Hollywood, Florida. The reason why I chose this location is that I want to show the actor being held captive in a room and how she is so close to civilization but cant reaches it. For the motel location, I am going to try and receive prior permission from the owners on whether or not I can film there for free. If they don't allow me to film for free I asked if I can pay a minimal fee for just the day.   In case the location falls though or I am unable to film a motel for a minimal price I will film at one of my peer's houses in a completely empty room with no furniture or anything. I have received prior permission from peer allowing me to film at her residence. The main and health concern that has been brought up is the location of the motel. To ensure the actors and mines safety will be filming at a motel in a safe location. Another concern is the props that will be used is, the chains and the handcuffs will be fake so that they don't hurt the actor's wrist.
The props that will be used are rope, chains, and handcuffs as well as a lamp. All these props will be fake accepts the lamp. The reason why I chose these props is that they help depict that story that I'm trying to create. The whole concept of this video that I'm trying to create is to show being trapped or held hostage by the things outside of their control. The chains, rope, and handcuff show and represent some being held hostage. There are only going to be one costume throughout the whole video. the costume is going to be ripped jeans and a half ripped shirt. To symbolism how the same things that have held the actor had also torn the actor apart. Another part of the costume is the actor's physical appearance the actor will appear to have been beaten up.
The schedule that I have put in place will help me be useful with my time. On 11/14 I will choose my song and research the genre that it is in I have already completed that. On 11/20 I will plan my entire music video including location list, schedule, storyboard and so forth. 11/25 I will first start filming all my shots that I needed to tell a good story. 12/2 I will be reshooting all the scened that I feel that could have been told better. 12/9 I will complete and finish editing music video and turn it into class. 12/11 I will complete my CCR and turn it into my teachers. I will try and follow this schedule completely.

Music Viedo Research

As me and my team wrap up our commercial on Dunkin Donuts and start our music video there is a few thing that worked well and went wrong. Those thing that went right will be integrated in my music vied. The issues that I faced in my last video I will try to better so I can integrate them in my music video. Some thing that went well in my previous project was following the storyboard consistently. Doing that allowed us to not have to due many re shoots as well as not be so constricted on time.Due to that I will being using the storyboard for the music video religiously as well.  However there were issues that I faced towards the end of the commercial project, the main issues was the editing processes. The reason for that being is that my group didn't familiarize ourselves with the editing process before hand. To better work on this project I will go over the basics of Pinnacle Studios.
The song that I have chosen to do the music video to is "Hostage" by Billie Ellish. The genre of the song is alternative/indie. The reason why i chose to do this song is because I can relate to it and I feel as though all type of people can relate. The reason why I relate to this song is because its a normal thing to feel trapped by the situations that your in as well as by other things. Another reason why I chose this song is because the lyrics and music is trying to say something important. Which is what I believe makes good music.
The genre of the music video is Alternative/ Indie.
  1. Costumes- the costumes usually in alternative/ indie music are lose not really tight fitted. Clothing can be a mixture of dark and bright as well as very casual clothing.
  2. Lighting in these music video are usually dark that represents a more gloomy mood.
  3. Actors- the actors in in this type of genre our usually young adults or teenagers.
  4. Make up- The make up used in this genre is very natural, little to no make up.
  5. Props- Props in this genre are mostly instruments,
  6. Setting- The settings in these videos are mostly in dark places like a room or at a house. The setting can also be a forest.
  7. Sound- The usual sound found in this genre is digetic, as well as non-diegetic,
  8. Editing-  clean cuts, smooth transitions.
  9. Camera angles- Establishing, wide shot, extreme close up.

Final Commercial Blog

Today was one of the last days that my group members and I had to finish the commercial. Due to that, I and my other team members were feeling the pressure. As well as I was extremely scared and worried that my group and I  wouldn't finish editing on time since it was one of the last days of class to finish the commercial. Today was the day that we got a majority of editing done as well putting on the last touches for the commercial. The reason why today I did the bulk of the editing was that during the previous classes the computers were not working. Also during Tuesday's class, the computers were working however my teammates and I ran into some issues a lot of them actually. One of the issues that we ran into is when we got our computer, pinnacle studios took a long time to start. As well as it took along to import the footage from google drive to pinnacle studios. After I finally was able to import the footage onto pinnacle studios, another problem arose, the videos were in bad quality because the computer was slowing them down. However, we tried our best even though we didn't finish.
During the editing process, a lot of effort and work were put in as well as changing some of the concepts to try and better our commercial. Some of the changes we made are that, during the scenes where the actor is sleeping and not energetic, I decided to make them black and white. Whereas the scenes were she is energetic and lively as well as drinking the Dunkin donuts, will be shown in color. Just to show the audience how much Dunkin Donuts can improve someone's life. Another thing was added was a 2-second transition message on a black screen between the sleeping scene and the actor talking to friends. The message that will display "In Another Universe". Another change that was added to the original concept is voiceover. The reason why we decided to do a voiceover because we felt that it would better present what were trying to say. Those all the changes that we tried to implement that shifted from the original idea of the commercial. These changes, in my opinion, made the commercial better than if we kept the original concept verbatim.
During the actual physical editing process, we ran into issues again. As previously mentioned the computer was slowing down the actual video so it made it really hard to see which video was good enough to use. So I had to go on my google drive and look at the videos to see which ones were gonna be in the final product. Doing that cut into our editing time because I had over 50 videos to look over. It was also very hard to try and shorten the scenes up because when we were trying to cut some parts of a scene it would take multiple tries for the part of the scene to cut. Another struggle that we had faced but eventually got through was adding the split-screen. We tried multiple times do as our instructor told but it wasn't working out. Eventually, my partner went on youtube to find out how to do a split-screen. Even though we didn't completely finish and still have some final touches to put in I am extremely proud of how the commercial turned out. All in all the experience of doing this commercial opened my eyes to different career opportunities.
